19/07/2008 - Nottingham Forest winger's ready to fly
Garath McCleary believes he will be able to showcase his true abilities for Nottingham Forest - once he has undergone his first full summer of pre-season training.
The flying winger made a big impact after signing from Bromley mid-way through the Reds' promotion push.
But he hopes to play an even bigger part for Colin Calderwood's side, when he has built himself up to the required fitness levels over the coming weeks.
McCleary was happy with his part in the finale to the League One season - but admits it took him time to adjust to the demands of professional football, following his step-up from non-league.
And he hopes to get a flying start to the new campaign, now he is a fit as his team-mates.
"I did feel as though I was coming to terms with the demands of professional football towards the end of last season, but I was very aware that I still needed to get a full pre-season behind me," said McCleary.
"Hopefully that will benefit me when the season starts, hopefully it will allow me to take the next step onwards.
"It is an important pre-season for me, because it is my first at the club and it should allow me to start the season with the fitness I need, rather than catching up as I had to last season."
McCleary, currently out with the rest of the squad on a training camp in Germany - admits they have been made to work hard since reporting back following the summer break.
"It has been hard work, but the training has been superb, I have really enjoyed it," he said.
"The running that we have been doing is very different to non-league.
"It is short and sharp but it does benefit you a lot more.
"All the boys have been working really hard, we can't wait until next season."
