Birtles: Forest have all strike bases covered

Thursday, July 02, 2009, 07:00

NOTTINGHAM Forest legend Garry Birtles believes Billy Davies has assembled a strike force to cover all bases in the Championship next season.

But while he welcomed the additions of David McGoldrick and Dele Adebola, Birtles wants to see Forest quickly wrap up their other transfer activity.

The squad returned for pre-season training after making three summer signings in the space of 48 hours.

McGoldrick, a £1m buy from Southampton, and Adebola, snapped up on a free from Bristol City, both took part (pictured).

And so did winger Paul Anderson, who made his one-year loan stint from Liverpool permanent in a £250,000 deal.

Birtles said: "I was impressed with McGoldrick and what he did last season. Scoring 14 goals in a side which was relegated was very good.

"He has got pace, plays off the shoulder of another striker and he possesses quality.

"The fans and I am sure Billy will be relieved to have got some business done before pre-season training got under way.

"He has now got two good strikers with Adebola and McGoldrick. And that is great for Forest.

"They now have a well-stacked striking department, giving the manager plenty of options.

"He has a blend which is what he would have set out to get. We all know strikers win games and that is why they are paid more money.

"He has the quality up there but while that is good, he will now want to get business tied up in midfield and defence."

The new forward pair join last season's top scorer Robert Earnshaw, Nathan Tyson and Joe Garner in the strike department.

Forest are still chasing a goalkeeper to challenge Paul Smith, who was handed number 21 on his training gear yesterday.

QPR's Lee Camp is still on their radar and fullback Chris Gunter wants to rejoin on loan from Premiership Tottenham.

Davies is still chasing at least two central defenders in Blackpool's Shaun Barker and Doncaster's Matt Mills plus Preston midfield stalwart Paul McKenna, as he looks to get the final pieces in his jigsaw.

And Birtles insists it is vital that happens soon.

"Billy said he does not like, and does not intend, to play square pegs in round holes and he has lost Ian Breckin at the back so he will be desperate to get in another central defender and fullback," said Birtles.

"While up front is sorted, the midfield still lacks creativity and experience and he will be looking to address that too.

"Maybe last season Forest looked great in one game, then lost their way in the next two. It was one step forward, two back and there was a lack of consistency.

"The balance was not right and Billy will want to get that right.

"He has got the striking department sorted. Now he will want to do the same with the others because you need to make a strong start to the season otherwise you are always playing catch up."
